ALABAMA
The panhandle's long stretch of sugar white sand beaches extends into Alabama.
So white and fine is this sand that some people have suggested that this
is where Hilton must get their supply for ashtrays. But the beaches here
are no ashtrays - Perdido Key and Gulf State Park are two natural gems,
with great sand and aquamarine water that have attracted people for generations.
Fort Morgan at the mouth of Mobile Bay anchors the westward end of this
32-mile strand of coast, which is a mixture of natural areas, such as Bon
Secour Wildlife Refuge, and high-rise condominiums and luxury hotels at
Orange Beach. Take your choice of vacation experience.
Dauphin Island on the other side of Mobile Bay is the time-honored beach
getaway for Alabamians. A long bridge brings you to this offshore island.
The eastern end is fairly high and forested, akin to the Sea Islands of
Georgia. Single-family houses were built on the slender and storm-vulnerable
sand spit. A series of hurricanes have ravished the development on this
low-lying barrier spit, pushing beach sand all the way across the island
into the bay waters. You almost have to know someone to find a place to
stay, as people tend to come back year after year to "their" beach.
